-
- Using "V.42" as an alias for LAPM is a bad idea, since the ITU-T V.42
- document specifies both LAPM and, in an annex, an "alternative
- procedure" which happens to be MNP(2,3,4).
-
- The maximum frame size used during a LAPM connection is subject to
- negotiation. The default for the maximum size is an I field of 128
- octets. Many modems which offer 256 octet frames with MNP (this frame
- size is an integral part of the optimizations making up MNP4) don't
- bother to negotiate this extended frame size for LAPM.

-
- I'm not aware of any modem negotiating for 512 octet frames, but some
- might be willing to accept them. Note that larger frames not only
- improve throughput but also increase the latency of the link, because
- the data carried by a frame cannot be processed further before all of
- the frame has been received and its integrity has been determined.
-
- Neither am I aware of any modems using the longer 32-bit FCS strongly
- suggested in V.42 for use with large LAPM frames.
